The Health Sciences Centre in St. John's, NL, is a tertiary acute care facility serving the province and is a teaching hospital affiliated with Memorial University. It provides a wide range of services, including specialized treatments, emergency care, cancer care, mental health services, rehabilitation, and long-term care. The centre also focuses on research and innovation, staff well-being, and community engagement

Position Details:

Position:  Full-Time Security Guard
Site: Health Science Centre
Overtime: Overtime after 48 hours
Hours: Continental Rotation
Payrate: $20.55/hour
Posting Date: June10th, 2025
Internal Closing Date: July 15th, 2025
External Closing Date: July 15th, 2025

Schedule Example:

• Week 1 - Days - Mon-Tues, Fri-Sat
• Week 2 - Days - Sun, Wed-Thu
• Week 3 - Nights - Mon-Tues, Fri-Sat
• Week 4 - Nights - Sun, Wed-Thu

Key responsibilities:

• Monitor and maintain Security and Safety of patients, visitors and staff through regular patrolling and surveillance. 
• Respond quickly and effectively to incidents of aggression or behavioral crisis. 
• Document incidents accurately in legal notebooks and reporting software. 
• Assist clinical staff in managing potentially aggressive or volatile situations using provided deescalation techniques. 
• Collaborate with clinical staff, law enforcement, and emergency responders as needed.
• Monitor and provide access entering and exiting the Psychiatric Assessment Unit.

• Patrol Hospital Grounds: Conduct regular rounds of hospital premises, including parking areas, hallways, patient rooms, entrances, and exits, to ensure the safety and security of the site.
• Monitor Surveillance Systems: Operate security cameras and alarm systems, ensuring any suspicious activity is reported immediately to the appropriate authorities.
• Access Control: Monitor and control entry points to the hospital, ensuring that only authorized individuals are allowed access to restricted areas.
• Respond to Emergencies: Act quickly in emergency situations, such as medical emergencies, fire alarms, or security threats. Assist hospital staff as needed during crises and evacuations.
• Provide Customer Service: Greet and assist visitors, patients, and hospital staff. Provide directions and ensure that guests adhere to hospital policies and procedures.
• Conflict Resolution: De-escalate tense situations, resolve conflicts, and ensure that all interactions are handled calmly and professionally.
• Report Writing: Document daily activities, incidents, or accidents accurately. Complete reports on incidents, breaches, and security concerns.
• Collaboration with Hospital Staff: Work closely with hospital staff and local law enforcement to provide a coordinated security effort and ensure the safety of all parties involved.
• Enforce Hospital Policies: Ensure that hospital policies, including visitor and patient protocols, are followed. Address any violations in a manner that upholds hospital safety standards

Prerequisites:

• Valid Security License for the province of Ontario
• Valid First Aid & CPR - Level C (from a CSA-approved vendor)
• Covid Vaccine two doses
• Immunization records for Mumps, Measles, Rubella, Varicella and two step TB skin test
• Valid G class Driver License
• English (oral and written) fluency is a must
• Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field preferred.
• Must be able to provide certifications in Use of Force (UOF) and Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB)
• Applicants lacking these certifications can opt into Paladin's UoF/MOAB training program prior to their onboarding training to ensure they meet the requirements of the position
