Site Description: The Cape Breton Regional Hospital is located in Sydney and is the regional referral and trauma center for Cape Breton Island. The Cape Breton Regional is part of a four-hospital complex that also includes Glace Bay, New Waterford Consolidated and Northside General Hospitals.
Position Details:
Role: Healthcare Access Control Security Officer
Site: Cape Breton Regional Hospital
Term: Casual with the opportunity to transition into full-time in the future
Hour: 0700-1900hrs, 1900hrs-0700hrs
Payrate: $20.50
Position Summary: The Healthcare Access Control Officer will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of patients, staff, and visitors by operating advanced AI-powered weapon detection systems at the entrances of larger and regional hospitals within NSHA. This position requires exceptional communication and customer service skills to provide a safe, welcoming environment while maintaining a strong security presence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate and monitor AI-based weapon detection and access control systems at designated hospital entry points.
- Engage with patients, visitors, and staff in a professional, courteous, and empathetic manner while conducting screening procedures.
- Respond to system alerts, conduct secondary screening when necessary, and escalate incidents according to NSHA security protocols.
- Provide clear directions, support, and reassurance to individuals passing through the access control process.
- Maintain accurate records of incidents, security breaches, and equipment performance.
- Collaborate with healthcare staff, security teams, and law enforcement partners as required.
- Uphold infection control and hospital safety policies while ensuring smooth traffic flow through entry points.
- Contribute to a culture of safety, respect, and inclusivity within the healthcare environment.
Prerequisites & Qualifications:
- Ability to obtain Security License for the province of Nova Scotia
- Valid Standard or Intermediate First Aid & CPR - Level C (from a CSA-approved vendor)
- English (oral and written) fluency is a must
- Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field preferred.
- Must be able to provide certifications in Use of Force (UOF) and Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB)
- Applicants lacking these certifications can opt into Paladin's UoF/MOAB training program prior to their onboarding training to ensure they meet the requirements of the position
- Please be aware: The UoF/MOAB training is not paid as it is a pre-requisite; however, Paladin will cover all of the costs of the training with a 6-month commitment to the position/availability
